ABOUT BICHON FRISE

The Bichon Frise is a lively, intelligent, and charming small dog breed, perfect for families and first-time dog owners. Weighing 4–9 kilos and standing 23–30 centimetres tall, these compact dogs reach full size by one year. Known for their distinctive appearance, Bichon Frises have a slightly rounded head, expressive black eyes, and a curly, hypoallergenic coat that makes them ideal for allergy sufferers.

Bichon Frises are friendly, playful, and affectionate, with a comical and fun-loving personality. They are highly intelligent, eager to please, and relatively easy to train, though they thrive on companionship and may experience separation anxiety if left alone for long periods. With a lifespan of 12–15 years, Bichon Frises are generally healthy but require regular grooming and vet check-ups to maintain their well-being. Their combination of beauty, brains, and a loving temperament makes them one of the most sought-after small dog breeds.

HISTORY OF BICHON FRISE

The Bichon Frise has a fascinating history that traces back to the Barbet, a Mediterranean water dog. The name "Bichon" comes from Barbichon, referring to the small, pocket-sized version of the Barbet. This breed family includes the Bichon Frise, Maltese, Bolognese, Coton de Tulear, and Havanese. Once adored by European nobility, the Bichon Frise’s popularity declined during the French Revolution in 1789, leaving many dogs abandoned on the streets of France and Belgium.

After World War I, French breeders worked to save the breed from extinction, gathering surviving dogs and carefully breeding them. Initially called Bichon or Tenerife, the breed was officially renamed Bichon Frise in 1933, meaning "curly-coated Bichon." It was first recorded in the French Kennel Club stud book in 1934 and gained American Kennel Club (AKC) recognition in 1972. Today, the Bichon Frise is celebrated as a playful, hypoallergenic companion and is classified under the Toy Group by kennel clubs worldwide.
